EtG Test - EtG / EtS - Ethyl Glucuronide
Ethyl Sulfate Alcohol Drug Test
Also known as "The 80 Hour Alcohol Test"
EtG/EtS is a laboratory
based urine test that will detect the presence of alcohol up to 80 hours after
consumption. The EtG alcohol test is is sometimes referred to as “The 80 Hour Alcohol Test” and
tests for Ethyl Glucuronide and Ethyl Sulfate.
information on the EtG Test and EtG Testing see
EtG Information below.
Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) and
Ethyl Sulfate (EtS) are metabolites produced by the body only after the
consumption of alcohol has been consumed. EtG and EtS are excreted from the body
in various ways. Our laboratory is one of only a few laboratories in the
country that has the ability to identify and quantify these two metabolites.

RESEARCH QUALITY LABORATORY
In the United States, alcohol abuse has reached
epidemic proportions. The overall risks to physical and mental health can be
devastating. More severe are the tens of thousands of fatalities annually which
are attributed directly to alcohol intoxication. The costs associated with
enforcing laws, prison systems, governmental programs and non-profit funding is
Until recently, testing methods for alcohol
consumption have remained unchanged and unreliable. Urine ethanol has it’s flaws
such as false positive results. The window of detection for breath alcohol
testing is small and always had to be confirmed by laboratory blood testing
which may not occur for many hours after suspected consumption.
Our Laboratory has changed the face of alcohol
testing industry. We have the capability of measuring consumption up to 80 hours
afterward. Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) and Ethyl Sulfate (EtS) are metabolites
produced by the body only after alcohol has been consumed. EtG and EtS are
excreted from the body in various ways and our Laboratory is one of the few
laboratories in the country able to identify and quantify these two metabolites.
The New Front Runner: EtG & EtS
• EtG and EtS are easily quantifiable with
Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry not GC/MS and proper measurement of both
metabolites can differentiate consumption vs. environmental exposure
• EtG/EtS confirmation is the perfect testing
method for ‘Zero Tolerance’ situations and an effective and noninvasive tool for
voluntary treatment facilities and school systems
• EtG/EtS can not be masked by
illnesses i.e. urinary tract infections, and false positive results from
diabetes are eliminated.
The Most Advanced Technology Available
Our Laboratory has the most accurate technology
available for the drug and alcohol testing community. Liquid Chromatography Mass
Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) is research quality laboratory equipment, and can
accurately quantify substances well below cutoff levels. This technology
surpasses Gas Spectrometry, which in the past had been labeled the ‘gold
standard’. Western Slope Laboratory currently owns and operates 4 LC/MS/MS and
we are constantly investing in our technology.
Collection Process & Shipment
The urine collection device developed by our
Laboratory is as innovative as the testing process. An absorbent material
encased in a sealable tube. The design provides ample volume of specimen for the
lab and is less bulky than urine transport cups. Our collection device minimizes
accidental spills or specimens destroyed in transport . Because our Laboratory’s
collection devices are compact and lightweight, this reduces transportation
EtG Info -
What is EtG?
Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) is a
direct metabolite of ethanol alcohol. The presence of EtG in the urine can be
used to detect recent alcohol consumption, even after the ethanol alcohol is no
Consequently, the presence of EtG
in the urine is a definitive indicator that alcohol has been ingested.
Traditional laboratory practices
typically measure the amount of alcohol present in the body. Depending on the
amount of alcohol that has been consumed, this method usually reveals alcohol
ingestion within the past few hours.
The presence of EtG in the urine,
on the other hand, demonstrates that ethanol alcohol was ingested within the
past three or four days, or roughly 80 hours after the ethanol alcohol has been
metabolized by the body.
As a result, it can be determined
that a urine alcohol test employing EtG is a more accurate indicator of the
recent consumption of alcohol as opposed to simply measuring for the existence
of ethanol alcohol.
Accuracy and Reliability of the EtG Urine Alcohol Test
Our lab uses the most advanced,
accurate, and precise equipment and technology that is available (LCMS or
LC/MS/MS) to sift through, validate, and quantify the presence of EtG. Under
these stringent parameters, the EtG urine alcohol test provides highly accurate
The Key Benefits of Using the EtG
Test Include the Following:
EtG tests detect recent usage more accurately and for a longer time
period compared with standard testing
EtG testing is a great match for abstinence and zero tolerance
EtG tests provide an accurate and reliable indication of alcohol
ingestion within the previous 3 to 4
EtG is only detectable when alcohol is ingested and is not produced
as a result of alcohol fermentation
EtG testing facilitates monitoring in alcohol treatment programs
EtG test function as an early warning system that can identify
EtG tests can be accurate and reliable when performed by LC/MS/MS on
state of the art equipment
Some labs can provide thirty-six hour turnaround time from receipt
of the urine specimens
EtG tests can be run on urine specimens in conjunction with other
drug testing methods
Top-rate labs can provide results via fax, the U.S. mail, and via
Urine Alcohol Test EtG: Parting Thoughts
As long as employers lose
considerable amounts of money and "person-hours" to alcohol abuse, they will
continue to employ random alcohol tests. As a consequence, a number of
organizations and companies have implemented random EtG urine alcohol tests as
part of their alcohol and drug screening protocol.
Urine alcohol tests with EtG
are not only accurate and reliable, but they also provide many screening
benefits. When their relatively inexpensive cost is added to the equation,
moreover, EtG urine alcohol tests become a reasonable and cost-effective
methodology for employee alcohol screening and testing.
Some Interesting Facts:
effects can be physical and psychological for the drinker. The effects of
alcohol abuse not only have consequences for the drinker but for those around
her or him as well. Alcohol abuse effects can be immediate as well as long term
effects of alcohol abuse.
What causes alcohol
abuse? Many factors influence a person's initial alcohol use. Personality
characteristics, peer pressure, and psychological stress can all contribute to
the early stage of alcohol abuse. These factors are less important as alcohol
use continues and the person repeatedly experiences the potent pharmacological
generally more common in light to moderate drinkers than heavy and chronic
drinkers, suggesting that binge drinking can be as threatening as chronic
drinking. Any man who drinks more than five drinks or any woman who has over
three drinks is at risk for a hangover.
According to the
alcohol abuse research literature, U.S. males are four times as likely as
females to be heavy drinkers. Interestingly, this statistic holds for people of
all ages. Unfortunately, this probably means that four times as many men as
women will become abusive in their relationships, will experience
alcohol-related problems at work, and will become alcohol dependent
